CHAPLET FOR THE SOULS IN PURGATORY
How to Pray to the Chaplet
The purpose of the chaplet is to assist the souls in Purgatory in expiating their debt of temporal punishment due to sin.
It is composed of indulgenced liturgical prayers for their benefit.
The chaplet consists of a crucifix and 27 beads. The three sets of seven beads represent the three hours of Our Lord’s agony on the cross during which He atoned for the sins of men. The seven beads of each set stand for the remains of the seven capital sins from which the holy souls are being purified.
HOW TO RECITE
Psalm 129 De Profundis Out of the depths I cry to You, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice! Let Your ears be attentive to my voice in supplication: If You, O Lord, mark iniquities, Lord, who can stand? But with You is forgiveness, that You may be revered. I trust in the Lord; my soul trusts in His word. My soul waits for the Lord more than sentinels wait for the dawn. More than sentinels wait for the dawn, let Israel wait for the Lord. For with the Lord is kindness and with Him is plenteous redemption; And He will redeem Israel from all their iniquities.
(3 years; or a plenary indulgence, under the usual conditions, if recited daily for a month)
On the three beads:
(to make up for their sins against faith, hope and charity)
First bead: Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest.
Second bead: Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest.
Third bead: Lamb of God, Who takes away the sins of the world, grant them eternal rest.
On the single beads: May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen. (300 days each time)
On the groups of seven beads: Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. (300 days each time)
On completing the chaplet: V. Athirst is my soul for God, the living God. R. When shall I go and behold the face of God?
Let us pray.
O Lord Jesus Christ, Redeemer of all the faithful, grant to the souls of our brethren who have passed out of this life the remission of all their sins; that by the intercession of Blessed Mary ever Virgin and all the saints, and through our own devout prayers, they may obtain the pardon which they have always desired. Who live and reign world without end. Amen.
